“I myself did not know him,” said John the Baptist, Jesus’ own cousin. Obviously, this is a different kind of knowing than simply being acquainted with someone. Perhaps that’s why the Gospels have no physical description of Jesus. The evangelists don’t want us to simply know about Jesus, but to actually know him. For in knowing Jesus we know God, and then we really know ourselves.
