David Godkin
A short autobiography

I, David Godkin, new pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church, was born on May 7, 1976 in London, Ontario. I come from a small family of four. My parents, Ken and Karen, live in Brampton, Ontario while my brother, Paul, makes his home in Sudbury, Ontario with his wife Alison.

After graduating from high school, I entered the University of Waterloo and completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science Co-op. I worked in a variety of settings on my co-op terms including positions with the Departments of Agriculture and Indian and Northern Affairs, as well as Corrections Canada. Following graduation, I was blessed to work as a counsellor in a group home for one year. Then, in 2001 I was drawn to the Holy Ministry and enrolled as a theological student at Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary in St. Catharines, Ontario.

In the summer following my first year at seminary, I was blessed with the opportunity to work with Hospitality Ministry in downtown Toronto, reaching out with the Gospel to newcomers to Canada. I very much look forward to working with Pastor Hollmann in this exciting ministry in Montreal as well. During my second year of study, I attended Westfield House, the Lutheran seminary in Cambridge, England. This was an enriching experience that exposed me to a new culture and enabled me to visit several different countries. For my fieldwork at seminary, I was assigned to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Port Colborne, Ontario while my vicarage year was spent in a four-point parish in Togo, Canora, Kamsack, and Springside, Saskatchewan (about two hours east of Regina). This wonderful year allowed me to experience life in a small town with friendly congregations.

I have a number of interests and hobbies such as cycling, swimming, jogging, juggling, ping-pong, tennis, music, and the arts, as well as the outdoors.

I am very thankful that our Lord has called me to serve His beloved people here at Ascension. Besides the blessing of being located in a fantastic city, the people of Ascension have been very warm and welcoming. I look forward to helping to build up the Body of Christ in this place and I relish the opportunity to share the salvation of Jesus Christ with those who do not yet know Him.
