The famous Greek philosopher Heraclitus realized that you can never step in the same river twice: life is always changing. The mission of Christ’s Church, to call people to change and find forgiveness and eternal life in Jesus, is always the same. But the people to whom it’s proclaimed, and how it’s proclaimed, never stay the same. In the words of the apostle Paul, we try and “become all things to all people, that by all means [we] might save some. [We] do it all for the sake of the gospel, that [we] may share with them in its blessings.” (1 Corinthians 9:22-23) We want all the people of Montreal to be joined with Christ that we might all share in his rich and abundant gifts in the midst of the evils of this world.

On the one hand, we cannot deny the general loss of faith that has settled over our province and city. Some Christian churches fell prey to a love of power against Jesus’ explicit warnings, and ended up souring many on the Christian faith.  Others have forgotten that Christ did not come to judge and condemn, but to save.  Different sects and cults continue to spring up, but they end up offering nothing but a hypocrisy or despair.  Still others have forgotten Christ’s call for us to repent, to acknowledge that we don’t do the things we ought to, and that many of our inclinations are not God-pleasing.

But on the other hand, where it was once Slovaks who filled Ascension’s sanctuary, it is now Québecois, Mandarin-speakers, Pakistanis, Malagasy, Jamaicans, Ghanaians, Guyaniens, Americans, and English-Canadians, worshipping Christ in French, English and Mandarin.  In short, people of (almost) every tribe and language on earth.  People gathered to hear about a God who chose to enter into the world’s suffering in order to defeat it, and gives us eternal life as a free gift.

The future of Ascension is simple: to continue to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Montreal, and to support it’s proclamation around the world.  If you are curious about the Christian faith, or are looking for a church that trusts the Holy Scriptures to proclaim Jesus and his salvation to us, we look forward to seeing you soon!
